Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916) was an Italian painter and sculptor who helped shape the Futurist movement. The movement was interested in the dynamism, speed, and technology of the modern industrial city. Boccioni’s sculpture “Unique Forms of Continuity in Space” (1913) sought to capture a figure in motion, transforming the human body with the suggestion of mechanical power. The figure’s marching form appears easily manipulated by the force of wind around it, while its metal contours allude to the power of machinery.
